Week 2 - Proof of Concept

Welcome to our Week 2 Devlog!

This week we completed our proof of concept/tech demo! Since we already built our core in the game jam last week, we decided to add extra features to that build for this week's tech demo.

Things to take note of when watching the video:

  • We added the ability to interact with the environment!
    • Right now this mechanic takes form by small "traps" that can be clicked on by the user. Doing so will automatically "activate" them, changing the environment.
      • The window's from nearby buildings can be lifted and lowered, creating small platforms.
      • There are open manholes on the ground that our player could fall into! Click on the yellow cover to plug those holes shuta
    • The rhythm of the jumps are perfectly synced up.

      • The lights at the top (not final) show the beats of the music.
      • On the 2nd and 4th beats, the pizza guy will jump.
      • Even during frame drops, everything will stay in sync.
    • We have imported some voxel art!
      • Our artists are able to create voxel art, import them into unity, and add lighting effects.
      • There were still some struggles with the import pipeline that we plan on fixing tomorrow.
    • We have a level layout with a night-time vibe.
      • We were able to have level designers fill out the level and place everything accordingly.
      • The night-time feel was successfully established, while still remaining visible enough for the player to see what they're doing.

Next week, we have two big things to work on:

  • Game design document.
    • We want to meet early next week (earlier than we did this week for sure) to discuss what we want in our game. We will be fleshing out ideas throughout the week, culminating in our finalized GDD on saturday.
  • Setting up the full dev environment for everyone.
    • Developing this tech demo definitely showed some flaws in our tech pipeline, especially w.r.t. the voxel importer and unity versions.
    • It's important for us to get together this week to fix these issues and make sure everyone is able to quickly and smoothly collaborate. Then we will be able to smoothly transition right into the core of our game development the following week.

Overall, this week has been a great learning experience for everyone.  Our team is excited to see push this game to its fullest potential!
